Summary Chapter 21-25
Chapter 21 Another Blow
Mr. Parks called Austin and told him that Mrs. Paxton was dead on Monday. They found her in her bed. They judge that she has been dead for couples of days. They held the burial the next day. There were only a few neighbors at the cemetery. Mr. Matt was put on probation for six months. Anna's keep telling herself that she fail as a minister wife because she can't help anyone.
A new baby girl joined their family on September sixth. They called her Rachael Ruth. Anna's prepared herself for another difficult winter. A missionary barrel came with a visit from the superintendent. It was the discarded clothes from people who could afford new ones. Anna was looking for a winter for Maggie, but all the clothes was summer wear. Then Anna found a way to make winter coat, she dismantle the pillow and get the feather that could give you warmth.
Chapter 22 Toughing It Out
Church conference time was approaching again, and Anna both looked forward to it and dreaded it at the same time. It would be nice to sit and chat with ladies who understands her thoughts, her feeling. But Anna felt uncomfortable as she prepared their meager wardrobe for the coming event. Anna took his Sunday shirt material and fashioned new cuffs and collar. Austin was satisfied with it. Anna always told herself that she was a failure and a wife. She always think that Austin make a wrong decision choosing her. But then Anna decided that she wouldn't attend the conference this year, even though she wanted to meet with the other ladies.
Chapter 23 News
Anna was making the new diapers of wool that she get it from the quilt of the bed. Austin arrived home on the following day. Throughout the afternoon Austin thought of little bits of news to pass on to Anna. After the girls had been tucked into bed, Austin and Anna talked. Austin told Anna about his thinking of quitting on being a ministry. Anna felt weak with the unexpected, unwelcome discovery.
Chapter 24 Mrs. Angus
Daily Anna watched for the arrival of the missionary barrel. It was hard to be patient with fall approaching and so few proper garments on hand for her small daughters. Suddenly the Angus made Anna a surprise visit with new clothes. Anna talked so much about many thing with Mrs. Angus. As Reverend and Mrs. Angus took their leave, the older woman drew the younger toward her and told her to be herself.
Chapter 25 Release
Anna spent hours in prayer in the days that followed. Through her talk with Mrs. Angus she had finally been able to forgive herself for failing Mrs. Paxton. But Anna still felt a heaviness about her lack of aptitude for the ministry. Austin worked as hard. Anna was abled to accept the truth as well. She knew that she in herself was capable of nothing of eternal value. Austin read his new script to Anna "Released to serve". A gentle and quiet peace began to fill Anna's being.

Summary Chapter 13-20
Chapter 13 Trouble
The din from the nearby playground was almost deafening at times. Anna sometimes wondered why they had to make so much noise just playing a game of ball. The boy are behaving better. But Anna still fear that they will get trouble from nature. Rain was falling everyday, Anna was thankful that the new church building was waterproof. The rain finally did cease to fall and things began to dry out. They boys come to her house and give the money for the window they broke.
Chapter 14 Sorrow
The next day, Austin told Anna that Timmy Lawes her favorite child, has gone by drowning accident. Anna and Austin stayed the night to comfort the child family. But when night came and it was time to tuck the children into the bed that had been prepared in the living room floor, Anna wonder that it took her hours to still the fears, dry the tears, and comfort the people. They had the funeral service two days later. The building was finish but still Anna worried about how to act as the minister's wife.
Chapter 15 Concerns
Anna was preparing for her Sunday lesson, Mr. Brady was her teacher. Anna didn't have the courage to speak in class. Anna like to study so that she could glean all that was possible from the lessons. Understanding the laws and the reason of their existence helped her gain clearer picture of God. The sermon had progressed step by step. Anna wish that Austin's preaching would be important to five young ladies. The new parishioner named Mrs. Larkins was a widow that doesn't have any children. Anna feel sad for her. Austin and the others help the new member get moved in and settled. Anna prayed that there wouldn't be any trouble for her husband.
Mrs. Larkins ways were much more subtle. She prayed that the congregation might not blame Austin for the overtures. Anna was sure that people were talking behind Mrs. Larkins back, no one could be blind to the intent young widow. Anna feel jealous of Austin that young widow get his attention. Austin plan that they should have the Christmas service, but no one volunteer.

Even though the work and a new mother was difficult Anna didn't complain she was happy that she have Maggie.

Summer had really arrived, the kid made good use of the play area. Anna knew that Ben was sick because he didn't appear at the play area. Anna visit Ben at the Crosses house, she feed him eggnog. No one in the whole town would have guessed that Matt Cross would be the preacher's first convert. The Barker had made a big difference to Mr. and Mrs. Cross.
Chapter 19 Baptism
Anna's days seemed to be more than full, what with the garden, calling, housekeeping, care of baby Maggie, and duties at the church. Mr. Cross meet with Austin once a week, together they studied the Scriptures about the Christian life. Ben finally recovered from his ill and join his friend again in baseball. Then Mrs. Landers told Anna that the neighbor's pig got out and they most ruined Anna's garden. The garden was worse that Anna could think about, she prayed to the Lord to help her out of this problem. Matt Cross wanted to be baptized, it was a surprise for many people to see the new Matt Cross. After the baptize, Austin catch a cold because the water was cold and the wind chill him to the bone. Anna's made a chicken soup that got from Mr. Brady.

Ben and Sid came to Anna's house acting strange, when Anna's ask them they just told that uncle Mart is visiting. When Anna's go to their house she was shock because she saw Matt was dead drunk. Matt just got baptize, the Barker are very disappointed.

Summary Chapter 7-12
Chapter 7 Changes
Something had change when Anna comeback, she didn't seem to fit in anymore. Anna didn't understand it herself that what changes. But Anna still a obedient daughter. But a part of her, a very small part of her, was somewhere else, reliving another world. A world that she could not dismiss now that she knew it actually existed. The world which have new challenges of new ministers. Pastor Barker got his assignment on a small town named Carlhaven. Anna pray for him and his new church every night. Then Austin's mother sent Anna a letter. A strange letter that somehow said that Anna to pass on information about her son to her. Then one day Austin surprise Anna by visiting her.Anna wishes that Austin would get a good wife that will help him in the ministry, and she know that once he got a wife she would be pushed away, she would miss him. On the way to deliver the milk to the new reverend Austin proposed to Anna and ask her to marry him. After thinking for a while Anna say yes.
Chapter 8 Beginning to Serve
They were married in Anna's church. Anna feel a bit worry that she need to leave and never get to do her chores again. The new couple reach their parsonage and Austin introduce Anna as Mrs. Austin Barker for the first time on Sunday. Anna could hardly believe that she was Austin's wife, he's a good and fine man. They settled into their new life and new roles. Though she loved her new life as Austin's wife, Anna missed her family even more than she had prepared herself for.
Chapter 9 Calling
The next Sunday after he had completed his sermon, Austin talked with the congregation about his desire to see them have their own place of worship. Anna knew he wanted to get started in seeking God's direction. The only thing that brought them a change of diet was the "calling".
Chapter 10 Reaching Out
Anna made and custard for the supper and share them to Mrs. Paxton. Then Mrs. Paxton showed Anna the violet. Austin got letter about the boys making trouble. Something certainly should be done, before they got themselves into serious trouble. The next morning when Anna started out for the store, she stopped in horror at a message scrawled in their front yard fence. The town officials were pleased that the young minister was serious about meeting the needs of the children in a practical way. Anna was very pleased for Austin.
Chapter 11 Struggles
Austin was out in the vacant lot. Anna was busy making the sign, anxious for the town to know what was going on in the weedy lot. After finishing Anna was so tired to prepare the supper. Anna went to see the violet of Mrs. Paxton again, she named the violet with Mrs. Paxton. Anna visits with Mrs. Paxton became more frequent. Mostly, the conversation was about violet. As soon as the snowdrifts disappeared and the spring puddles began to dry, the new playground became a hive of activity, just as Anna predicted.
Chapter 12 Building
On the following Sunday, Pastor Barker announced to his little flock that they had been presented with a deed for the property on Main Street. Anna wondered that Austin would need a moral support. One man alone might stagger with the enormity of the task. Anna was missing her family, she returned to her family for a visit for a few days and returned back to her small town and the little parsonage to continue with her chosen life.

Summary Chapter 1-6
Chapter 1 Anna
Anna paid no attention to the warmth of the sun, or the trees as she was deep into her sad thought. This is her last day of school ever. She knew she had been blessed to have learned because long ago girls are forced to drop out to help at home. Anna had completed her eighth grade. School is finished, It'll never go again hung heavily upon her. Anna loved her school, she loved to learn, loved the excitement of new discoveries, loved the quickening of her pulse as she shared some great adventure in the pages of a book. Anna finished eighth grade with first class honor, which her mom was very proud of it. Anna was the oldest with six younger brothers. Anna loved her little chats with the kind Mrs. Angus or her elderly pastor husband. The people who were really educated and Anna longed to learn.
Chapter 2 Surprise
Anna hurried down the road to visit the parsonage. She also bring her certificate to show them to the minister and his wife. Mrs. Angus had made her promise that she'd bring the important piece of paper and show it to her. Anna always felt welcomed and accepted at the parsonage. The door opened and a stranger stood with his hand on the doorknob. Mrs. Angus was away for the summer because her granddaughter is getting married.The man show Anna commentaries. Then the man let Anna borrow one book. Anna got home and told her mother about the book, her mother also ask her about the man that give her the book.
Chapter 3 Learning
The man's name is Pastor Austin Barker. The Trent was talking about this man. Every district mother try to get Austin's attention with dinners and suppers and social invitations. Anna thought it was silly, which it made her mother relief because she won't need to worry losing Anna.
Mrs. Trent has been right about the neighborhood mothers and daughters. Girls are dressed to be beautiful, some of them are Anna's lifelong friends. This doesn't matter to Anna, but she wondered how the young man felt about this excitement and silliness. Anna went to Austin and exchange the book after she had read all of it which was very fast and make the man surprise. Anna understands about God story.
Chapter 4 A Brief Summer
Anna spent the summer listening to soul-stirring sermons and drawing deeply from the well of knowledge in the books she regularly selected from the young interim pastor's library. Anna ask Austin about the book she read. Sometime Austin doesn't knew how to answer some of her candid questions, but he always honest and straightforward. Anna was worried that she couldn't finished all of the story by the end of summer, which Austin would be leaving the city. Anna wish that she was a boy so that she can be a preacher. Anna was completely unaware of the glances that were cast her way as she waited for the young minister each Sunday.
Then it was the last Sunday for Austin. He would miss the conversation he had with Anna. Austin feel happy that he got to take over Reverend Angus's work for the summer. Anna was worried that she wouldn't get to borrow the new book but Austin tell her that he could send the mail to her or let the Angus be the courier. Anna felt blessed indeed. The more she learned, the more she wanted to learn.
The busy fall and winter kept Anna busy that she doesn't have time to read the books as she wished. Austin sent new books periodically, and the book came with brief letter telling of his seminary studies. Anna felt lucky than other girl that she get to spend time reading and studying.
Anna's brother are also growing. Adam have finished eighth grade and now helping his father side. Horace is also taken over Adam's chores. Petey also have given some simple task. Mrs. Trent says that Austin wouldn't come this summer because Mrs. Angus didn't go anywhere. Mrs. Trent also asked Anna about Austin, she wonder if he would come back, he was a good preacher.

Anna felt her heart swell with pride as she watched the young man reach out to accept the hard-earned degree. Finally after 2 years Anna and Austin met, Austin take Anna to meet his parents and his classmates. Finally after 2 years Anna and Austin met, Austin take Anna to meet his parents and his classmates. Anna has grown and everyone was surprise because what Austin told other was that Anna was a young girl. Anna also told Austin about her trip here.
