Chapter 1 Anna
Anna paid no attention to the warmth of the sun, or the trees as she was deep into her sad thought. This is her last day of school ever. She knew she had been blessed to have learned because long ago girls are forced to drop out to help at home. Anna had completed her eighth grade. School is finished, It'll never go again hung heavily upon her. Anna loved her school, she loved to learn, loved the excitement of new discoveries, loved the quickening of her pulse as she shared some great adventure in the pages of a book. Anna finished eighth grade with first class honor, which her mom was very proud of it. Anna was the oldest with six younger brothers. Anna loved her little chats with the kind Mrs. Angus or her elderly pastor husband. The people who were really educated and Anna longed to learn.
Chapter 2 Surprise
Anna hurried down the road to visit the parsonage. She also bring her certificate to show them to the minister and his wife. Mrs. Angus had made her promise that she'd bring the important piece of paper and show it to her. Anna always felt welcomed and accepted at the parsonage. The door opened and a stranger stood with his hand on the doorknob. Mrs. Angus was away for the summer because her granddaughter is getting married.The man show Anna commentaries. Then the man let Anna borrow one book. Anna got home and told her mother about the book, her mother also ask her about the man that give her the book.
Chapter 3 Learning
The man's name is Pastor Austin Barker. The Trent was talking about this man. Every district mother try to get Austin's attention with dinners and suppers and social invitations. Anna thought it was silly, which it made her mother relief because she won't need to worry losing Anna.
Mrs. Trent has been right about the neighborhood mothers and daughters. Girls are dressed to be beautiful, some of them are Anna's lifelong friends. This doesn't matter to Anna, but she wondered how the young man felt about this excitement and silliness. Anna went to Austin and exchange the book after she had read all of it which was very fast and make the man surprise. Anna understands about God story.
Chapter 4 A Brief Summer
Anna spent the summer listening to soul-stirring sermons and drawing deeply from the well of knowledge in the books she regularly selected from the young interim pastor's library. Anna ask Austin about the book she read. Sometime Austin doesn't knew how to answer some of her candid questions, but he always honest and straightforward. Anna was worried that she couldn't finished all of the story by the end of summer, which Austin would be leaving the city. Anna wish that she was a boy so that she can be a preacher. Anna was completely unaware of the glances that were cast her way as she waited for the young minister each Sunday.
Then it was the last Sunday for Austin. He would miss the conversation he had with Anna. Austin feel happy that he got to take over Reverend Angus's work for the summer. Anna was worried that she wouldn't get to borrow the new book but Austin tell her that he could send the mail to her or let the Angus be the courier. Anna felt blessed indeed. The more she learned, the more she wanted to learn.
The busy fall and winter kept Anna busy that she doesn't have time to read the books as she wished. Austin sent new books periodically, and the book came with brief letter telling of his seminary studies. Anna felt lucky than other girl that she get to spend time reading and studying.
Anna's brother are also growing. Adam have finished eighth grade and now helping his father side. Horace is also taken over Adam's chores. Petey also have given some simple task. Mrs. Trent says that Austin wouldn't come this summer because Mrs. Angus didn't go anywhere. Mrs. Trent also asked Anna about Austin, she wonder if he would come back, he was a good preacher.
As Anna went to sent milk to the parson. Mrs. Angus said that Austin invite her to his graduation ceremony.
Chapter 5 Preparations
Anna was very excited about the ceremony. But when thoughts of meeting so many strangers, so many educated people, assailed Anna, she floundered. Mrs. Trent was also excited dressing Anna. Everyone was surprise, Anna look very beautiful. Anna go with the Angus by train.
Chapter 6 Graduation
As Anna went to the ceremony she knew that the Barker Family would also be there which make her nervous. As the ceremony goes on they call the names by alphabetical order, here comes Austin Tyler Barker. Anna felt her heart swell with pride as she watched the young man reach out to accept the hard-earned degree. Finally after 2 years Anna and Austin met, Austin take Anna to meet his parents and his classmates. Anna has grown and everyone was surprise because what Austin told other was that Anna was a young girl. Anna also told Austin about her trip here.
